I'm very pleased to announce the completion of The Dream Gallery: Seven California Portraits, a big piece for soloists and virtual orchestra that in some ways feels like the culmination of the compositional work I've been doing for the past 10 years.
The product of an intense year-and-a-half of composing and recording, The Dream Gallery is a collection of music depicting archetypal Californians and the regions in which they live. It exposes both the state's varied landscape and the fault lines of its characters' internal worlds. Trading idealism for realism, these complexities are richly highlighted through music that melds elements of classical, rock and jazz, and is performed by high caliber musicians from across the state.
Read more...To emphasize the characters' individuality, I chose a different singer for each piece; all accomplished their mission in admirable fashion. I had worked with only one of these fine musicians previously, Mary Jaeb. The other six -- David Marshman, Janelle DeStefano, Martha Jane Weaver, Carver Cossey, Delaney Gibson and Tom Zohar -- form along with Mary a fascinating cross-section of the musical life of Southern California.
Please download a 16-page booklet that includes the lyrics to the work (in nice big readable type), photos and bio material on the singers, and some further remarks of mine about the project.
I hope you'll enjoy The Dream Gallery!
